All You Need To Know About Ghanaian Afrobeats And Afropop Singer Wendy Shay – Nominations, Awards And More

Ghanaian Afrobeat and Afropop singer, Wendy Addo Asiamah, professionally known as Wendy Shay has been in the Ghanaian music industry for three years and counting and from all indications, she has come to stay and make an impact on the male-dominated industry. Before we get into how she shot to fame and how she’s maintaining her relevance in the industry, let’s delve into her early life and education.

Wendy Shay was born in Accra on February 20, 1996, to Mr and Mrs Addo where she relocated to Germany with her three siblings after the painful death of their father, Mr Addo. At the time of her relocation, she was just four years old and had developed an interest in music already.

Before relocating to Stugart, Germany, Wendy Shay attended Morning Star school and St. Martins De Porres and continued her education from Grade 7 in Germany. Since she had developed passing for music, she enrolled in a music school in Bernhausen, Germany where she got the fundamentals of music.

Aside from being passionate and doing music, Wendy Shay is a professional nurse whose speciality is Midwifery and she was practising it in Germany before she permanently moved to Ghana to pursue her music career which is now going well for her.

Wendy Shay was introduced into the Ghanaian entertainment industry in January 2018 by the Chief Executive Officer of Rufftown Records, Ricky Nana Agyeman, after the sad demise of Dancehall diva, Ebony Reigns, originally known as Priscilla Opoku-Kwarteng.

Wendy Shay replaced the late Ebony Reigns at Rufftown Records and it’s the very reason why people think she rode on Ebony Reigns’ name to reach where she’s gotten to. But she has always denied those claims. To her, it’s her hard work and talent that have brought her this far and not Ebony Reigns’ legacy.

On June 1, 2018, Wendy Shay’s first-ever song titled “Uber Driver” was released with its music video and it became a hit a few hours after it was released on YouTube. Wendy Shay got some backlashes for dragging the names of President Akufo-Addo, John Kufuor and John Mahama in the song which suggested that they are obsessed with staring at women.

Popular Broadcast Journalist, Afia Pokuaa, came hard at her and accused her of disrespecting former Ghanaian Presidents. But Wendy Shay’s Manager, Ricky Nana Agyeman, jumped into her defence that it’s never disrespectful to feature the names of former presidents in a song. He went back and forth with Afia Pokuaa for days.

Despite Wendy Shay’s controversial songs, she was enstooled as Ahenemba Hemaa of Gomoa Afransi in 2019 where she was given the stool name, Queen Ewurabena Ofosuhemaa Shay. She still holds that title.

Below are the number of songs Wendy Shay has released three years into her music career:

“Uber Driver”, “Bedroom Commando”, “Astalavista” “Psalm 35” (featuring Kuami Eugene, Sarkodie), “The Boy Is Mine” (featuring Eno Barony), “Masakra” (featuring Ray James), “All For You”, “Shay On You”, “Stevie Wonder” (featuring Shatta Wale), “All For You”, “Kut It”, “CTD”, “Tuff Skin Girl”.

Wendy Shay’s relationship status remains a mystery to date but she’s been rumoured on countless occasions to be in a romantic relationship with her manager, Ricky Nana Agyeman professionally known as Bullet. Recently, Bullet came out and revealed that his girlfriend has left him all because of these relationship rumours with Wendy Shay and lashed out to those spreading the rumours.

Wendy Shay has boldly tagged herself as the queen of Ghana music and keeps bragging about winning a Grammy award for Ghana someday. She has been dragged severally for given herself the title ‘Queen of Ghana music’ but she doesn’t seem to care about the backlashes from music lovers.

Some say she’s been disrespectful to the long-serving female musicians such as Efya, Becca and others by tagging herself as queen of Ghana music. They believe if there’s any title as queen of Ghana music, it should be given to Efya or Becca and not Wendy Shay.

One can confidently say that Wendy Shay shot to fame as a result of the controversies created around her. All these controversies might have been planned by her Management team to get her into the limelight. It’s not easy getting into the mainstream within three years but Wendy Shay has been able to do it and now rubbing shoulders with those who have been in the industry for decades. She could be the first Ghanaian musician to win a Grammy award for Ghana with hard work, persistence, perseverance and quality production of music.

The Grammys is no joke but Wendy Shay is determined to do it for Ghana and we wish her all the best as she kickstarts her journey of winning a Grammy award for this country.

Wendy Shay also jumped on the #FixTheCountry trend on Twitter and lamented over how people have been bullying celebrities on the internet. Wendy Shay believes that cyberbullying in Ghana should also be fixed and stopped because a lot of celebrities aren’t able to stand these trolls and mostly go into depression when they are being trolled.

In a tweet, she said; “We have a lot to fix as a Nation. Can we also fix cyberbullying on Twitter Facebook and Instagram ? Dumsor needs to be fixed But personally cyber bullying has done me more harm than dumsor #fixeverythingWe have a lot to fix as a Nation. Can we also fix cyber bullying on Twitter Facebook and Instagram ? Dumsor needs to be fixed But personally cyber bullying has done me more harm than dumsor #fixeverything“.
