Born Dennis Nana Dwamena and professionally known as KiDi cannot be omitted from the list of Ghanaian musicians putting Ghana on the map with their talent and craft. KiDi is undoubtedly one of the few talented young musicians currently in Ghana and his works speak volumes. His style of music, stage works and how he carries himself have drawn the majority of music lovers to his side.
With that being said, let’s take a look at how KiDi stormed the Ghanaian entertainment industry and rose to fame and how he’s putting Ghana on the map.
KiDi is 27 years old and he was born on August 18, 1993, to Gerald and Beatrice Thompson. KiDi started his primary school education at St. Anthony’s School in Kumasi and then proceeded to Accra Academy for his Senior High School education. After successfully passing his West Africa Secondary School Examination (WASSCE), he got admission to study Economics and Information Studies at Ghana’s premier university, the University of Ghana and graduated in 2016.
After bagging a degree in Economics and Information Studies in 2016, he started pursuing his music career where he performed on various Moonlight Café platforms — “a production that supports underground artistes and gives them a platform to display their talents”. KiDi after realizing his full potential in music took a bold step and participated in the popular MTN Hitmaker competition and won in 2015. He was then signed onto Richie Mensah’s Lynx Entertainment Record Label — the record label making a big difference in the Ghanaian music industry.
In 2017, KiDi’s music career saw a major jump after he released his hit song “Say You Love Me”. In the same year, he released another hit song titled “Odo” (Love) which became an anthem on the lips of the masses. KiDi then remixed “Odo” with Nigerian superstar, Davido and Mayorkun in December 2017. And then in April 2018, he released another love song titled “Adiepena” and got featured on Wyclef Jean’s show “Run That Back” in 2020. KiDi has stayed relevant ever since he shot to fame in 2017.
KiDi as a musician has performed on notable platforms such as Sarkodie’s Rapperholic concert, Ghana Music Honors 2017 Edition, December to Remember 2017, S-Concert 2017, the 61st Ghana Independence Celebration Show, March 2018 at the Indigo 02 in London, United Kingdom. KiDi has also mounted the stage with influential and powerful musicians such as Sarkodie, Wizkid, Tiwa Savage, Shatta Wale, Samini, Mzvee and others.
On awards, KiDi grabbed six nominations at the 2018 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards in the categories, ‘Best New Artiste’, ‘Afro-pop Song of the Year’, ‘Male Vocalist of the Year’, ‘High-life Song of the Year’. The good news is that he won the ‘High-life Song of the Year’ in April 2018. That was great feat for a musician who had been in the industry for just a year.
Still on awards, here are some awards KiDi has won in his career:
4syte Music Video Awards 2017 — Highlife Song of the Year
3Music Awards 2018 — Most eventful Snapchat channel of the Year
AFRIMA 2018 — Best Artiste Duo or Group in Africa Contemporary
Vodafone Ghana Music Awards 2018 — Best Male Vocalist
3Music Awards 2019 — Best Male Vocal Performance
Vodafone Ghana Music Awards 2020 — Album of the Year (Sugar)
KiDi at age 27 has a son but not married. He showed off his handsome son on Instagram in June 2020 and let everyone know about him. According to KiDi, his son was born in 2016 and also disclosed why he kept him off social media during a phone-in interview with TV3’s MzGee. He revealed that he kept his son off social media because he wasn’t mentally ready to let Ghanaians know about the little boy. Also, he was scared of the comments people would pass and judgements. KiDi received backlashes after he disclosed that he won’t marry the mother of his son. People got furious and threw shots at him for that comment.
In January 2021, KiDi signed a big partnership deal with MadeInENY and EMPIRE — “music publishing and entertainment companies that promote and grow talents”.
MadelnENY as an entertainment entity has worked with music stars such as P. Diddy, Usher, Jennifer Lopez, Notorious BIG, Faith Evans, Keyshia Cole, Mario Winans, and Danity Kane and many others. This should tell you how KiDi fortunate is to have partnered with MadeInENY.
The partnership deal between KiDi, MadeInENY and EMPIRE is basically to expand his reach to the international music scene and grow his craft.
With the above partnership, KiDi could be the first Ghanaian musician to get a Grammy nomination since MadeInENY and EMPIRE have the track record of managing Grammy award-winning musicians such as Anderson Paak, DRAM and Kendrick Lamar.
KiDi has 1.6 million followers on Instagram, 332, 650 on Facebook and 832,700 on Twitter. This is an indication that KiDi is being followed by the masses obviously because of his style of music and talent.
It’s no doubt that KiDi has a bigger future and he needs to work harder to make that bigger future happen. He’s likely to win the ‘Artiste of the Year’ at the 2021 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs) base on his works under the year review.
KiDi’s recent work is titled “Touch It” and so far, it has garnered 508,003 views on YouTube and counting. He recently revealed during an exclusive interview with Berla Mundi that he’s never received royalties from GHAMRO and MUSIGA on all his songs.
According to KiDi, despite not receiving royalties, he’s comfortable and doing well in life since he gets money from other sources with his songs.
KiDi has also announced a new album titled “The Golden Boy” in June 2021.
