Rolando Hinojosa was an American novelist, essayist, and poet who taught English at the University of Texas in Austin under Ellen Clayton Garwood.
He grew up in Mercedes, Texas, and was born in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas to a family with strong Mexican and American origins.
His father fought in the Mexican Revolution, while his mother took care of the family on the other side of the border.
Hinojosa was a voracious reader as a child and was reared speaking Spanish until junior high when English became the dominant language.
Hinojosa, like his grandmother, mother, and three of his four siblings, became a teacher and has held a variety of academic positions as well as administrative and consulting work.
He went to New Mexico Highlands University and the University of Texas at Austin. Hinojosa earned his doctorate in 1969 from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign.
Hinojosa has spent the majority of his writing career working on the Klail City Death Trip Series, which now contains 15 volumes, ranging from Estampas del Valle y otras obras (1973) to We Happy Few (2006).
Through this generational tale, he has entirely inhabited a fictional county in Texas’ lower Rio Grande Valley. Although Hinojosa prefers to write in Spanish, he has translated and written in English as well.
