The Georgia Bulldogs rode a tenacious, suffocating defense to a College Football Playoff participation and, finally, their first national championship since 1980.
On Thursday night, they made even more history. Five Georgia defenders were chosen in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, breaking the record for the most defensive players chosen in the first round from a single school in the common draft era (since 1967).
The Bulldogs beat the previous record held by Miami (2004) and Florida State (2004). (2006). Georgia’s athletes began flying off the board with the first choice in the draft when Jacksonville selected edge rusher, Travon Walker.
Twelve choices later, defensive lineman Jordan Davis, an interior defender who captivated spectators at the NFL Scouting Combine in early March, became the Philadelphia Eagles’ second pick at No. 13 overall.
Minnesota selected Georgia defensive back Lewis Cine with the 32nd pick in the first round. Between the choices of Davis and Cine, the Green Bay Packers used both of their first-round picks on a pair of Georgia defenders: linebacker Quay Walker (22nd overall) and defensive lineman Devonte Wyatt (28th overall).
