Football games in the United States, at all levels of play, are not complete without a halftime show. The entertainment provided during the Super Bowl, the annual championship game of the National Football League (NFL), serves as a vital link between the game and pop culture, helping to increase the broadcast audience and generate enthusiasm across the country.

University marching bands (the Grambling State University Marching Band has performed at the most Super Bowl halftime shows, appearing in six shows, including at least one per decade from the 1960s to the 1990s), drill teams, and other performance groups, such as Up with People, were all featured in the halftime show prior to the early 1990s.

Pop music performers like New Kids on the Block and Gloria Estefan began performing during the halftime show in 1991. The halftime show during Super Bowl XXVII included a starring performance by Michael Jackson in an effort to draw in more viewers. The halftime show has been sponsored by Pepsi since 2013.

Halftime show performers get no appearance fee, but the NFL pays for all of their entourage’s expenditures, including band members’ management and technical crews as well as security guards.
There were several notable exceptions to this rule, such as Michael Jackson’s performance at the Super Bowl XXVII halftime show, which was sponsored by the NFL and Frito-Lay.
