Mondesi was added to the Royals’ active roster for the 2015 World Series.
When he pinch batted for pitcher Danny Duffy in Game 3 and struck out against New York Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard, he became the first player since Bug Holliday in 1885 to make his major league debut during a championship series.
On November 2, 2015, he received his first World Series ring after the Kansas City Royals defeated the New York Mets in Game 5 of the World Series.
Mondesi was promoted to Double-A for the 2016 season. Mondesi was suspended for 50 games on May 10 after testing positive for clenbuterol, a banned substance in Major League Baseball.
His punishment was lowered from 80 games to 60 games since the drug was consumed through cold medicine.
Mondesi hit his first major league home run against Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander on August 16, 2016. Mondesi became the Royals’ youngest home run hitter since Clint Hurdle in 1978.
Mondesi finished the season with a .185/.231/.281 batting line in 47 games and nine stolen bases. Mondesi played AAA throughout the bulk of the 2017 season.
In the major leagues, he batted .170/.214/.245 with five stolen bases in 25 games. Mondesi was promoted from the minors in June to play shortstop on a regular basis after starting the season in the minors.
