Yankees: Albert Abreu is facing do-or-die 2021 season
The Yankees have announced that pitchers Albert Abreu and Robert Ahlstrom would be traded to the Texas Rangers in exchange for Jose Trevino.
Abreu doesn’t have any other alternatives, so he’d have to make the Yankees’ Opening Day roster or accept a promotion to the minors.
Abreu was facing an uphill battle to make the Bronx bullpen after posting a 5.15 ERA in 36.2 innings last season. For a Rangers team in need of bullpen depth, he’s a good buy-low option.
Abreu has pitched well this spring, allowing only one hit and no runs while striking out six batters in 4.2 innings.
In a professional game, Ahlstrom has yet to appear. The Yankees selected him in the seventh round of the July draft. In 90 innings pitched for Oregon in 2021, the left-hander had a 2.50 ERA and 92 strikeouts.
Trevino will presumably start the season as Kyle Higashioka’s primary backup catcher, replacing Rob Brantly.
Despite the fact that Brantly signed a minor-league deal in December that included an invitation to big-league camp, the Yankees now have the option of sending him to the minors or even releasing him.
