Born in Hackney and raised in East Ham, Elba used the stage name “Idris” while attending high school in Canning Town, where he got his start in the acting industry.

He attributes his first big break to an advertisement for a play he saw in The Stage; he auditioned and met his first agent while playing in the role. A year later, he had formed his own DJ firm with the support of several of his friends.
