He was picked in the 40th round of the 2015 Major League Baseball draft by the Detroit Tigers, but he did not sign and instead enrolled at the University of Florida.
Kowar pitched in 12 games as a freshman in 2016, posting a 3-0 record and 3.37 ERA with 44 strikeouts in 34+23 innings thrown.
His season was cut short in May when he was forced to sit out due to a medical issue unrelated to sports.
In 2017, he returned and went 12-1, marking the best single-season record in Florida history, while also having a 4.08 ERA and 84 strikeouts in 19 games (18 starts).
Kowar won the save in the 2017 College World Series championship game, pitching 1+23 scoreless innings and clinching Florida’s national title.
Kowar was chosen to the All-SEC Second Team as a junior in 2018. In 18 starts, he went 10-5 with a 3.04 ERA in his junior season.
