Last month, the Boston Red Sox took a chance on right-handed pitcher Joel Payamps, a 40-man roster casualty for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The 26-year-old has only played in the major leagues for a short period of time, but he was judged expendable by teams looking to preserve prospects ahead of the Rule 5 Draft.
The right-hander has yet to wear a Red Sox uniform, but he has already made an impression in limited action this offseason with the Dominican Winter League’s Estrellas de Oriente.
Payamps, who was signed by the Colorado Rockies as a 17-year-old out of the Dominican Republic in 2011, was claimed by his third organization, the Red Sox, who also designated Robert Stock for assignment in the process.
Over the course of his career, the right-hander has struggled with control, walking 205 batters in eight minor league seasons.
The right-hander also struck out 576 batters, but as the figures show, free passes hurt the pitcher’s reputation.
In 2019, Payamps debuted in the major leagues, pitching four innings and walking three batters while striking out three.
After being summoned from Arizona’s alternative camp in 2020, he continued to struggle with control, walking three hitters and striking out two in three innings pitched. Despite the small sample size, the minor league statistics speak for themselves.
Payamps has a decent arsenal of offerings, according to Baseball Savant, including a four-seam fastball that averages about 94 MPH, a low-80s slider, a sinker that matches his fastball’s velocity, and a high-80s changeup.
