Because his father is Italian, Romano went on to pitch for the Italian national team in the 2017 World Baseball Classic.
He was Italy’s only Classic victory. With a 9-5 deficit against host Mexico, he relieved Tommy Layne in the ninth inning and struck out Japhet Amador on three pitches and Chris Roberson on four, before Luis Cruz flew out.
Romano earned the victory as Italy startled Roberto Osuna and Oliver Pérez with five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
His second performance was less impressive. With a 4-3 deficit and one on and one out in the bottom of the fourth, he relieved Luis Lugo, allowing Puerto Rico to extend their lead.
He walked Roberto Pérez and hit Kennys Vargas, but he struck out Mike Aviles and Kiké Hernandez.
He walked Angel Pagán in the fourth inning, then gave up a single to Francisco Lindor and a three-run homer to Carlos Correa to make it 7-3. At that point, Filippo Crepaldi took control.
Romano had their lone win and tied Layne and Pat Venitte for second on the 14-man staff with a 16.20 ERA.
Only Mike DeMark had a higher ERA on the staff, but Romano did have their only win, and his four whiffs tied him for second with Layne and Pat Venitte (one behind A.J. Morris).
