The Kansas City Royals are approaching an exciting moment as their outstanding farm system makes its way to the Major League level. Outfielder Kyle Isbel is one of those players making the transition.
Isbel played college ball at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He appeared in 170 games and 796 plate appearances in three seasons at UNLV.
He had 40 doubles, 15 triples, 21 home runs, 110 RBIs, and 18 stolen bases while hitting .322/.390/.512. Isbel was drafted in the third round of the MLB Draft in 2018 as a result of his outstanding collegiate career.
Isbel, the Royals’ No. 7 prospect, would play for the Lexington Legends, Idaho Falls Chukars, and Wilmington Blue Rocks in the minor leagues.
He even played for the Surprise Saguaros in the Arizona Fall League. He batted .277/.352/.450 in three minor league seasons, with 49 doubles, eight triples, 29 home runs, 117 RBIs, and 57 stolen bases.
Isbel debuted with the Royals on April 1, 2021. Last season, he saw baseball at its best, but he still needed to work on a few things.
Before the end of the month, he’d be transferred to Triple-A Omaha. One of the primary areas he worked on was his hitting, which led to offseason effort and has been on display throughout spring training.
Isbel has appeared in a total of ten games thus far. He has six hits, one triple, three home runs, nine RBIs, and a stolen base this spring with a .286/.400/.810 batting line.
The Royals are once again in a period of transition, and Isbel fits right in. As the season goes, he could have a much bigger part to play.
One interesting point to note is that the Royals have yet to sign Gold Glove winner Andrew Benintendi to a long-term deal.
