Nestor Cortes Jr. is ranked 25th on the Baltimore Orioles preseason prospect list. Jesus Liranzo, who is ranked 26th, is a distant second.

Hialeah, Florida, is home to the 27-year-old. The Yankees selected him in the 36th round of the 2013 draft out of high school. Until recently, he was a Yankees prospect who was selected in the Rule 5 draft by the Baltimore Orioles in 2012.

He played in the Gulf Coast League for two years and the Appalachian League for the third year of his professional career.

For the most part, he was used as a reliever in the GCL, making just five starts in 21 appearances. In 50 innings pitched over those outings, he had a 3.06 ERA, 58 strikeouts, and 10 walks.

Cortes made 10 starts in 12 appearances as a starter in one season in the Appalachian League. As a result of his success in his new role, he went 6 and 3 in 63.2 innings, recording a 2.26 ERA, 66 strikeouts, and just 10 walks.

The next year, Cortes played at all four of the team’s full-season minor league affiliates, with most of his time being split between the two A-level clubs.

Low A, Advanced A, and AAA all saw him play one game apiece, with 13 appearances in Low A and six in Advanced-A. He made 12 starts and threw 106 innings in 21 appearances.

He had a 1.53 earned run average and struck out 115 batters while walking 24.
