Pérez was a member of the Burlington Royals and Idaho Falls Chukars in 2008 and 2009. Pérez was promoted to the Wilmington Blue Rocks of the High-A level in 2010.
Pérez was promoted to the Double-A Northwest Arkansas Naturals in 2011 and the Triple-A Omaha Storm Chasers in 2012.
On August 10, 2011, Pérez was promoted to the major leagues for the first time, and he made his debut at Tropicana Field against the Tampa Bay Rays.
He threw out two baserunners, caught five popups (both unusual for the Royals at the time), drove in his first run in the fourth inning, and hit his first home run in the seventh.
Pérez’s first Major League home run came against Detroit Tigers pitcher Max Scherzer on August 29.
Pérez was on pace to hit for the cycle in that game. He batted .331/.363/.473 in 39 games as a rookie, with three home runs and 21 runs batted in.
Pérez signed a five-year, $7 million agreement with the organization on February 27, 2012, which included three club options and kept him under team control until 2019.
If he met all of his incentives and had all of his options picked up, he could earn up to $26.75 million.
His pre-arbitration seasons, two of his three arbitration-eligible years, and, assuming all of his options are taken up, his final arbitration year and his first two years of free agency were all covered by the extension.
In 2012, Pérez made $750,000, $1 million in 2013, $1.5 million in 2014, $1.75 million in 2015, and $200,000 in 2016. $3.75 million in 2017, $5 million in 2018, and $6 million in 2019 were his options.
