Meet Harry Kalas

Harold Norbert Kalas died on April 13, 2009, after a life that began on March 26, 1936.

He was an American sportscaster best known for winning the Ford C. Frick Award for his work as the lead play-by-play announcer for the Philadelphia Phillies of Major League Baseball from 1971 until his death in 2009.

Kalas was frequently affiliated with the National Football League, having worked as a voice-over narrator for NFL Films productions (a regular feature on Inside the NFL) and calling football games for Westwood One radio across the country.

Kalas died shortly after collapsing in the broadcast booth of the Washington Nationals on April 13, 2009, approximately an hour before a Phillies game versus the Nationals was set to begin.

In 1965, Kalas debuted in the major leagues with the Houston Astros, replacing Al Helfer and teaming up with Gene Elston and Loel Passe.

On April 12, 1965, he called the opening game at Houston’s Astrodome.

In 1971, he was recruited by the Phillies to replace Bill Campbell, and he served as the master of ceremonies during the inauguration of Veterans Stadium in 1971.

Kalas was teamed with Andy Musser and Hall of Fame player Richie Ashburn after By Saam retired.

Meet Eileen Kalas

Eileen Kalas was the wife of Harry Kalas from 1993 to 2009.

A rumor has it that the widow of Harry Kalas (Eileen Kalas), the late radio announcer, is selling their Upper Providence Township, Delaware County house, which is on 2.3 acres in a tight-knit neighborhood.

A four-bedroom, three-bath rancher located on Providence Road has been put on the market by Long & Foster’s Christine Clark Real Estate Team. Prices start at $625,000. Since 1986, the pair have made their home here.

Eileen Kalas intends to move out of the neighborhood. She claims to have purchased a home in Delaware with the intention of relocating “out West” in the future.
