In an Astros organization brimming with talented young pitchers, he got lost in the shuffle. He was dealt to the Blue Jays in exchange for IF Aledmys Diaz at the end of the 2018 season.
That provided him with an opportunity to shine, and he did so in spring training in 2019, striking out 16 batters in 15 innings to earn a spot in the team’s starting rotation after Ryan Borucki, who had been penciled in to fill the spot, was injured.
n his first eight starts, he was winless, owing to both inconsistency and poor run support (these starts included outings when he gave up no runs twice, and 1 run and 2 runs once each, but all resulted in no-decisions).
He won his first major league game on May 14th, defeating the San Francisco Giants 7-2, thanks to Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s first two career home runs.
He pitched a team-high 154 1/3 innings and went 6-9 with a 4.84 ERA in 32 appearances (29 starts). He fanned 149 hitters over the course of his career.
Trent was unable to build on his strong rookie season in 2020, as arm issues limited him to only three starts and 5 2/3 innings.
He had no decisions despite giving up 7 runs on 15 hits for an 11.12 ERA. He was assigned to the bullpen to begin the season in 2021, as he needed to improve his arm strength before being considered for a starting job.
Thornton’s leg kick is similar to Bronson Arroyo’s. While this was once typical, it is now uncommon, making it difficult for batters to pick up the ball as it leaves the pitcher’s hand.
