Torres made his AA debut with the Trenton Thunder in the 2017 season. A promotion to Scranton/Wilkes-RailRiders Barre’s saw him post an impressive .309 batting average in his first two-thirds of the season’s games.
Even though it was speculated that 3B Chase Headley’s poor play at the major league level would lead to his promotion, on June 17th he slid head-first into home plate and severely hyperextended his elbow, necessitating surgery with the bare minimum of recovery time.
As a result, he was unable to play the rest of the season. With 31 runs, seven homers, and 34 RBIs in 55 games between the two levels, he hit .287/.383/.480.
During spring training in 2018, Torres had a good chance of snagging a starting infield spot for the Yankees, who had a number of positions open, including second and third base.
As a result of the Yankees’ belated acquisitions of veteran outfielders Brandon Drury and Neil Walker following the start of training camp, Torres was sent back to the minors for the time being.
However, the early-season injury to Drury and the inability of his replacements, Tyler Wade and Andujar, to produce much production re-ignited speculation that Torres could soon get a chance to prove his mettle in pinstripes, especially after he had spent the mandatory 20 days in the minors that pushed back his qualification for salary arbitration by a year.
The Yankees announced on April 21st that he would be called up the following day. In 13 games with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, he hit .370.
