About Pro Bowl
The National Football League’s Pro Bowl is an all-star game (NFL). The AFC–NFC Pro Bowl, which pits the best players from the American Football Conference (AFC) against those from the National Football Conference (NFC), has been known as the AFC–NFC Pro Bowl since 1970, when it merged with the rival American Football League (AFL) (NFC).
Instead of selecting players from each conference, the NFL experimented with an unconference model from 2014 to 2016, in which the teams were selected by two honorary team captains (both of whom are in the Hall of Fame). Prior to the game, the players were chosen in a televised “schoolyard pick.”
