To avoid an arbitration hearing, Britton agreed to a $3.2 million contract on February 4, 2015. After a first-half record of 1-0 with a 1.72 ERA and 23 saves in 24 tries, Britton was voted to his first MLB All-Star Game.
Britton threw two-thirds of a scoreless inning and struck out a hitter in the contest. He had a 4-1 record, and a 1.92 ERA, and he converted 36 of 40 save opportunities.
Third in the American League for saves was his best position in the league.
To avoid arbitration, Britton agreed to a one-year, $6.75 million deal with the Orioles on February 5.
A new Orioles franchise record was set on June 9 when Britton nabbed his 19th save in a row. When Britton converted 27 consecutive saves before the All-Star break to cap off the 2016 season, he increased his run to 29 games.
Second-straight All-Star selection, Britton worked in 3723 innings and finished his season with two victories, an ERA of 0.72 and 43 strikeouts.
This is a new MLB record for the longest streak of consecutive saves for a left-handed pitcher, and it ranks as the seventh-longest streak overall.
Until August 11, Britton had a record of 39 outings in which he hadn’t given up an earned run, which he achieved on August 11.
So, his ERA dropped to 0.56, and he recorded his 35th save of the year out of 35 attempts. When Britton made his 38th save of the season in 38 chances on August 22, he set a new record for most saves in a season.
For the first time since earned runs became a stat in 1913, he pitched in 43 straight games without conceding an earned run.
Britton’s MLB-record streak ended on August 24 when he allowed his first earned run in 44 appearances in a 10-8 victory over the Washington Nationals.
