Zackary Grant Britton known professionally as Zack Britton until February 2019, is an American professional baseball pitcher for the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball (MLB). He previously played for the Baltimore Orioles.
Orioles drafted Britton in the third round of the 2006 MLB draft, selecting him with the 85th overall pick. A professional contract and a $200,000 signing bonus were enough for him, so he didn’t even bother going to school.
Baseball America ranked Britton as the Baltimore Orioles’ third-best prospect prior to the 2010 season. At the halfway point of this season, he was ranked as the 10th best prospect in the entire league.
The Orioles’ top prospect was ranked second by Baseball America prior to 2011. When he was optioned to the Norfolk Tides on March 29, he was anticipated to begin the season in the minors, despite being the Orioles’ top pitcher in spring training.
Until April 3, when he was brought up as an injury replacement for Brian Matusz in the starting lineup. A 5-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field marked Britton’s MLB debut and finished a season-opening three-game sweep of the Rays. In six innings, he surrendered one run and three hits.
