Francis O’Farrell died on March 6, 2022, at the age of 91. He was born on October 9, 1927. He was a manager and player for the Irish national football team.
O’Farrell grew up on Friars Road in the Turners Cross neighborhood of Cork, having been born in Lower Dublin Hill in Blackpool, a suburb of Cork.
John McGrath, a well-known bowls player, was his grand-uncle. He grew up as a devout Catholic who attended Christ the King Church. In 1941, he captained the school’s Gaelic football team to its first trophy triumph.
After Tommy Moroney’s departure to West Ham United in 1947, O’Farrell began his playing career with League of Ireland club Cork United, replacing him in the first team.
He augmented his earnings as a semi-professional by working on the railways, earning £3 per week for each.
O’Farrell accompanied Moroney to Upton Park for a cost of £3,000 in January 1948 after being noticed by West Ham scout Ben Ives. For the transfer, O’Farrell earned a £1,000 fee.
