Nash was born on July 9, 1959, in southwest Detroit, Michigan, to a devout Christian family. Nash’s father, Robert, died of a heart attack when he was nine years old, on April 4, 1968, at the age of 36.

Nash’s mother, Wanda, died on December 27, 1994, after a four-year battle with breast cancer.

He studied psychology and educational philosophy at the University of Tennessee, where he majored in psychology and minored in educational philosophy.

Nash played center for the Tennessee Volunteers basketball team at the University of Tennessee.

From 1977 through 1980, he was a member of the team, which reached the NCAA Sweet 16 during that time.

Nash did not play a fourth year for the Volunteers after a physical conflict with head coach Don DeVoe and a number of other on-campus problems, and he attempted to transfer to Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio.

Nash made his professional wrestling debut as the orange-mohawked “Steel,” one-half of the tag team The Master Blasters, in World Championship Wrestling (WCW).

On September 5, 1990, he made his debut with Master Blaster Iron, defeating Brad Armstrong and Tim Horner at the Clash of the Champions XII.
