Sterling grew up in the 1980s on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Carl H.T. Sloss, an advertising professional, and Gladys (Hodrov) Sloss were his parents.

When the 1940 United States Census was taken on April 4, John was one year old and lived with his family in Manhattan.

Before leaving school to start his career in radio at a small station in Wellsville, New York, he attended Moravian College, Boston University, and the Columbia University School of General Studies.

For the 1970–71 NBA season, Sterling was the play-by-play announcer for the then-Baltimore Bullets. From 1971 until 1978, he served as the play-by-play announcer for Morgan State University football.

In 1971, Sterling joined the WMCA discussion show as a host.

He then worked as a radio announcer for the New York Raiders of the WHA, the New York Stars of the WFL, the NHL’s New York Islanders (when he was teamed with Bob Lawrence), and the ABA/New NBA’s York/New Jersey Nets (where he was paired mainly with Mike DeTomasso).

Sterling also worked with the Yankees for a while as a pre-game host on WMCA and WINS radio stations, as well as a co-host on cable portions with Mel Allen.

Sterling announced Nets and Islanders games for WMCA, WVNJ, WOR-TV, and SportsChannel New York from 1975 to 1980, and continued his WMCA chat show until 1978.

Sterling spent nine years in Atlanta, presenting a sports call-in show on WSB radio and covering the Braves (1982–1987) and Hawks (1981–1989) for Turner Sports after his initial stay in New York.
