Phil Hellmuth is an American professional poker player who has won a record sixteen World Series of Poker bracelets. He is the winner of the Main Event of the 1989 World Series of Poker (WSOP).
His introduction to poker came from his grandmother, whom he characterized as the most competitive card player he’d ever faced.
Hellmuth used to play Texas Hold’em poker against his peers in the student union when he was in college. He gained enough money through competing in events that, at the age of 21, he flew to Las Vegas with $20,000 in his pocket.
After several months had gone, Phil Hellmuth had lost all of his money in the game.
He alternated between laboring in the cornfields for a few months to gain more money and competing for greater prizes until he was able to make enough money to stay in Nevada’s metropolis.
With high expectations and goals of being a regular at the World Series of Poker, Hellmuth entered his first tournament in 1988, finishing 33rd after losing to Johnny Chan, who went on to win the tournament that year.
Despite this, he returned the next year, defeating Chan to become the youngest player to win the Main Event of the WSOP, at the age of 24.
