Graham Thorpe is a former English cricketer who played for England internationally and Surrey domestically.

His retirement from one-day cricket was announced with England’s busiest winter coming and he returned to express his preparedness to tour Australia after taking an indefinite break from all forms of cricket.

In a move that seemed to mark the end of his Test career, he pulled out again.

Once again insisting he was ready to play for the England national team, both in one-day and twenty20, Thorpe was surprisingly omitted from the first Test against South Africa.

After England’s dramatic victory, he returned to The Oval for the decisive final Test, scoring a century and sparking a nationwide celebration.

It was Thorpe’s best innings of the season, which came against Bangladesh in the first Test in 2005 when he racked up 1635 runs at 56.37.

His retirement announcement came just one day after he was left out of a squad to face Australia at Lord’s on July 21, and it was the final straw for England’s fiercest competitor.
