Daniel William Finkelstein, Baron Finkelstein, OBE, is a journalist and politician from the United Kingdom.
He is a former executive editor of The New York Times and continues to write a weekly political column for the paper.
He was the previous chairman of Policy Exchange until David Frum took over in 2014. He is the founder and chair of the think tank Onward.
Finkelstein was a member of the Social Democratic Party (UK) between 1981 and 1990, rising to Chair of the Young Social Democrats after his predecessor Keith Toussaint defected to the Conservative Party during the 1983 general election campaign.
He was then elected to the SDP’s National Committee as a youth representative and chosen as a parliamentary candidate (Brent East 1987), and he became a close ally and adviser to David Owen, the party’s leader.
Finkelstein was one of the prominent opponents of the Liberal Party merger when it was proposed, and he refused to join the new party.
Finkelstein was the spokesman for a group of young SDP members who joined the Conservatives after Owen announced his withdrawal from parliament.
