Barbara Charone is an American public relations specialist who works with bands in the United Kingdom. In the early 1970s, while still a university student, she worked as a journalist and music critic for the Chicago Sun-Times, the NME, and Rolling Stone.
In 1974, she relocated to England to work as a staff writer for Sounds magazine, eventually advancing to the position of deputy editor. She also wrote feature pieces and reviews for magazines such as Crawdaddy!, Creem, and Circus in the 1970s.
Charone began her public relations career in 1981 at WEA. After becoming the company’s publicity director, she left in 2000 to co-found the public relations business MBC PR.
Madonna, Depeche Mode, Primal Scream, Robert Plant, Pearl Jam, Rod Stewart, and Christina Aguilera are among her clients at MBC. Charone is also the author of Keith Richards’ authorized biography, which was published in 1979.
Barbara Charone was born in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up there. She published a pop music column for her high school newspaper before attending Northwestern University to study English.
She visited England with her parents towards the end of her first year of university in 1971, sparking a lifelong love for the country. She remembers seeing the Who on the BBC television show Top of the Pops and thinking, “What a fantastic country.”
Charone began a career in publicity and public relations when she joined WEA, or Warner Music, in 1981. She initially wrote biographically and news items on the many artists signed to the label; later, she became head of the company’s press department, a position she held for thirteen years, until 2000.
