Ben Roberts-Smith is a former Australian Army soldier and a wealthy businessman and the recipient of The Victoria Cross (VC) in 2011 and the Medal for Gallantry (MG) in 2006
Roberts-Smith left the military in 2013 to pursue a master’s degree in business administration at the University of Queensland. He was elevated to deputy normal supervisor of Seven Queensland, a regional television network, the following year.
In 1998, Roberts-Smith met Emma Groom at Holsworthy Barracks in Sydney. She was born into a military household. The pair married on December 6, 2003, at the University of Western Australia.
In 1996, Roberts-Smith enrolled in the Australian Army at the age of 18. After finishing basic training at Blamey Barracks in Kapooka, New South Wales, he was assigned to the School of Infantry at Lone Pine Barracks in Singleton, New South Wales. Roberts-Smith was then sent to the 3rd Battalion (3 RAR) of the Royal Australian Regiment at Holsworthy, New South Wales.
He began his career in a rifle company before moving on to become a section leader in the Direct Fire Support Weapons Platoon. Roberts-Smith served with 3 RAR in East Timor twice, the first time as part of the International Force East Timor in 1999.

Ben Roberts-Smith has two daughters with her ex-wife, Emma Roberts-Smith, Eve Smith, and Elizabeth Smith. His girls were born in 2010 as twins. They have been shielded from the media since their infancy.
