Wanda Yvette Sykes was born on March 7, 1964, in Portsmouth, Virginia, to Marion and Harry Sykes. Her father was a colonel in the United States Army who worked for the Pentagon.
She went to Hampton University in Virginia after high school. She received a B.S. in Marketing.
Her first employment out of college was with the National Security Agency, where she worked as a contracting expert for five years. Sykes began doing stand-up comedy about this time.
She went to New York City in 1992 and participated in “An Evening at the Improv.” At Caroline’s Comedy Club, she met Chris Rock and became his opening act.
Rock was so impressed with her that he engaged her to write for and perform on “The Chris Rock Show.” After that, she began writing for “The Keenen Ivory Wayans Show.”
In 1998, she made her cinematic debut in “Tomorrow Night.” Following that, he appeared in “Nutty Professor II: The Klumps,” “Down to Earth,” and “Pootie Tang.”
