Doug Ford is a Canadian businessman and politician who has served as the 26th and current premier of Ontario since June 2018 and leader of the Progressive Conservative (PC) Party since March 2018.
Ford declared in June 2013 that he would not seek re-election as a Toronto councilor in the upcoming 2014 election. At the time, speculation swirled that Ford might run for the leadership of the Progressive Conservative Party in Ontario’s next election.
He made the announcement on February 20, 2014, after meeting with PC leader Tim Hudak, after which he stated that he will not be running in the upcoming provincial election, which was scheduled for June 12, 2014.
Ford said he would not rule out running for mayor once his brother Rob entered rehab in May 2014. Despite returning from rehab, Rob decided to drop out of the race for mayor after being diagnosed with an abdominal tumor and being sent to a hospital.
Doug Ford entered the race for mayor of Toronto at the eleventh hour on September 12, 2014, just minutes before the deadline for nominations.
