Popular music has been influenced greatly by John’s songs and performance style. It is one of the most successful songwriting partnerships in history that he has had with Taupin.

John was born and raised in Pinner, where he learned to play the piano at a young age and joined the blues band Bluesology in 1962. In 1967, after both of them responded to a call for songwriters, he met his longtime musical companion, Taupin.

They wrote songs for other musicians for two years, and John worked as a session guitarist for other artists.

The album Empty Sky by John was released in 1969. With the Elton John Band in 1970, he recorded “Your Song,” which became his first UK and the US number one in both countries, making him the first solo artist to achieve this feat.

After Honky Château (1972) and Rock of the Westies (1975), John’s critical success peaked in the 1970s, when he released a string of chart-topping albums in both the U.S. and the UK (1975).
