Harris was born Estelle Nussbaum on April 4, 1928, in Manhattan, New York, to Polish Jewish immigrants Isaac (“Ira”) and Anna Nussbaum, who had a candy business.
When she was seven years old, she relocated to Tarentum, Pennsylvania, to be near her aunt and uncle, who had requested her father to work in their candy business. Tarentum High School is where she received her diploma.
