In the 1970s, Harold L. “Hal” Bynum was a songwriter affiliated with the Outlaw country movement.

Kenny Rogers, Patty Loveless, Johnny Cash, Cash and Waylon Jennings, and Jim Reeves are among the country performers for whom Bynum composed more than 200 songs.

George Jones, Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley, and the Grateful Dead have all performed Bynum’s song “The Old, Old House.”

Bynum won songwriting prizes from the Country Music Association Awards and the Academy of Country Music in 1977 for “Lucille,” the Song of the Year (co-written with Roger Bowling).

The Promise (2002) (also the title of his 2002 album) is an autobiographical book about Bynum’s background in Texas and his work as a songwriter in Nashville.

Bynum’s spoken word records are also well-known. Bynum’s Beauregard label issued both his book and the CD of the same name.

Hal Bynum built his name as a songwriter in the country/bluegrass scene in the 1950s and 1960s, authoring over 50 songs that were recorded before moving to Nashville and pursuing a full-time career in 1968.

However, Bynum took his time establishing himself as a performer; his debut album, If I Could Do Anything, was released in 1998 and featured a strong narrative structure.
