Rutherford, John Walter, was an Australian cricketer who appeared in one Test match in 1956.
Rutherford was born in Bruce Rock, Western Australia, and attended Northam High School for his senior education.
Rutherford, a right-handed opening batsman with a defensive bent and an occasional leg-break bowler who played for Western Australia from the 1952–53 season, was a science and mathematics graduate from the University of Western Australia.
Because Western Australia only played the other Sheffield Shield state cricket teams once a season until 1956–57, Rutherford’s five first-class hundreds in his first four seasons earned him selection for the 1956 Australian tour to England.
Rutherford continued to play state cricket for three more seasons, but despite top-scoring in the match and bowling his career-best bowling performance for Western Australia against the 1958–59 MCC touring side, he was not selected for the Tests and retired at the end of the season.
In 1959, he was a professional cricketer for Rishton in the Lancashire League, where he scored 831 runs and took 52 wickets.
He returned to first-class cricket in 1960–61, carrying the state team to win over the visiting West Indians, but he died of a small heart attack during the match and never played again.
Rutherford died at the age of 92 on April 21, 2022.
