Joan Joyce was the softball coach at Florida Atlantic University from August 18, 1940, to March 27, 2022. As a softball player with the Raybestos Brackettes and the Orange Lionettes, she set numerous records.

She also achieved records as a golfer on the LPGA Tour and on the U.S. women’s national basketball team.

Joyce, who was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, was a member of the Brackettes from 1954 to 1963, the Lionettes from 1964 to 1966, and the Brackettes again from 1967 to 1975.

During her career, she set numerous records in the sport that have yet to be broken. Her pitches were extraordinarily fast, reaching speeds of more than 70 miles per hour.

With a lifetime earned run average of 0.09, she has pitched 150 no-hitters and 50 perfect games. She pitched 38 shutouts in her record-setting 42-win season.

Her Brackettes team won the world championship for the first time in 1974. She struck out Ted Williams in an exhibition game at Municipal Stadium in Waterbury, Connecticut in 1961 (and again during a brief spell in 1966) and Hank Aaron in 1978.
