Emilio Mwai Kibaki happens to be one of the former presidents of Kenya. He was the third President of Kenya after they gained independence and ruled from December 2002 until April 2013. He had wanted to join the Kenya army after his secondary school education but the Kenyan Chief colonial secretary at that time, Walter Coutts, prohibited members of his community from joining the military.
Mwai Kibaki then enrolled at the Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda where he studied economics, history and political science. He then had his postgraduate degree at the London School of Economics where he studied BSc in public finance. When he completed his postgraduate studies, he went back to Makerere, his Alma Mater in 1958 where he taught as an Assistant Lecturer in the economics department until 1961.
After he left his lecturing job in 1961, Mwai Kibaki returned to Kenya where he entered into active politics and became an executive officer of the Kenya African National Union (KANU). In 1963, Kibaki was elected as Member of Parliament for Donholm Constituency, also called Bahati and now known as Makadara constituency in Nairobi.
In 1963, he was made the Permanent Secretary for the treasury and was also appointed as the Assistant Minister of Finance and chairman of the Economic Planning Commission
