Justice Sonia Sotomayor is currently the associate justice of the Supreme Court of the USA. She was nominated into office on May 26, 2009, by President Barack Obama. Sotomayor was born in the Bronx, New York City on June 25, 1954, to Puerto Rican parents.

Sotomayor lost her father died when she was nine years old and was raised by her mother. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Princeton University in 1976 and enrolled in Yale University where she graduated and earned her Juris Doctor in 1979.

After she completed university,  she got employed to work as an assistant district attorney in New York for almost 5 years. In 1991, she was nominated to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York by President George H. W. Bush. In 1997, President Bill Clinton appointed her to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. She was confirmed for the position in 1998.

Justice Sotomayor practised law informally from 1983 to 1986. She named her law firm Sotomayor & Associates which was located inside her Brooklyn apartment. She performed legal consulting work often for friends and family members.

In 1984, she entered private practice where she joined the commercial litigation practise group of Pavia & Harcourt in Manhattan.
