Lucy Jane Briers is an English actress. Briers portrayed Mary Bennet in the BBC’s Pride & Prejudice television adaption (1995). She has voiced the documentaries The Riddle of Pompeii and Nurses, as well as the 2001 series Ladette to Lady.
Briers was born in Hammersmith, London, on August 19, 1967. She is the daughter of Richard Briers and Ann Davies, both actors. From a young age, she aspired to be an actress.
Briers went to St Paul’s Girls’ School in London from 1978 to 1985, Lancaster University (where she studied theatre and sculpture), and then the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and National Youth Theatre for a three-year acting school. Briers plays the piano and the flute in addition to acting.
Briers first starred in Samuel Adamson’s one-woman show Some Kind of Bliss at the Trafalgar Studios in 2007, a role she returned in the 2008 Brits off-Broadway season. She starred in a West End staging of Chekhov’s Ivanov and the BBC miniseries Einstein and Eddington (2008).
She was originally featured in BBC Four’s Twenty Twelve in 2011 as Anna Mitchell, one of three candidates for the role of curator of the Cultural Olympiad, and subsequently as Laura, Ian Fletcher’s wife, with her face blurred. She made an appearance in Father Brown’s “The Tree of Life” in 2017.
