Madeleine Albright: Who Was The First Female US Secretary Of State?

Madeleine Albright was born May 15, 1937, at Smíchov, Prague in Czechia and died March 23, 2022, at the age of 84. In her lifetime, she served as the 64th USA Secretary of State under President Bill Clinton.

Two years after Madeleine was born, her family moved to Britain where her father worked for Beneš’s Czechoslovak government-in-exile. Her family first lived in Notting Hill, London, but later moved to Beaconsfield then moved again to Walton-on-Thames which was on the outskirts of London.

In 1962, her family relocated to Washington, DC, where they lived in Georgetown. Madeleine got the chance to study at Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies where she studied international relations. In 1968, she moved to Columbia to study for her Doctor of Philosophy, which she earned in 1975.

In 1972, she held a fund-raising for her daughters’ school which attracted several positions on the school’s education board. Through this fundraising, she got invited to organize a fund-raising dinner for the 1972 presidential campaign of U.S. Senator Ed Muskie of Main.

Madeleine taught Eastern European studies at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., in 1982. She also directed the university’s agenda on women in global politics.

Madeleine was married to Joseph Medill Patterson Albright from 1959 to 1982. The couple had three children before they separated.
