Meet Houston Astros TV Announcer Todd Kalas
Todd Harry Kalas is an American sportscaster who has worked for the Houston Astros as a television play-by-play announcer since 2017.
Kalas earned a broadcast journalism degree from Syracuse University’s S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications in 1988. He worked at WAER radio in Syracuse, where he called Syracuse Orange games.
Todd Kalas Career
As sports director at Vision Cable in Clearwater, he relocated to Tampa Bay. With the Louisville Redbirds, he began his baseball career in 1991.
He spent two years on the radio broadcast team of the New York Mets and three years on the television broadcast team of the Philadelphia Phillies alongside his father before joining the Rays.
Kalas joined the Rays’ announcing staff for their first season in 1998 and stayed with the team until 2016.
Kalas worked as a pregame and postgame host and in-game reporter for Fox Sports Florida and Sun Sports, and he also filled in as a color commentator when needed.
Kalas also handled play-by-play duties for the Rays’ television and radio broadcasts.
Beginning with the 2017 season, Kalas was appointed as the Houston Astros’ television play-by-play announcer on AT&T SportsNet Southwest on December 22, 2016.
The Astros announced on September 29, 2019, that Kalas’ contract, as well as that of his TV-broadcasting sidekick, color-man Geoff Blum, had been extended through the end of the 2021 season.
Todd Kalas works for Cox Sports Television in Louisiana during the offseason, doing play-by-play for college football, basketball, and baseball.
He is a radio broadcaster for the University of South Florida basketball team. He also serves as the Tampa Bay Lightning’s pregame host.
Todd Kalas Private Life
On the 15th of November, 2017, Kalas tied the knot with his longtime girlfriend, Michele Allen. They are Houstonians.
As the oldest son of Harry Kalas, a legendary Philadelphia Phillies broadcaster and the brother of professional poker player Kane Kalas, he is a member of the Philadelphia Baseball Hall of Fame.
As a tribute to his father Harry, Todd and his brothers Brad and Kane threw out the first pitch during the first home game in Philadelphia just four days after his father’s passing on April 13, 2009.
When Todd threw the ball to Mike Schmidt, a third baseman in the Philadelphia Baseball Hall of Fame, he also threw it to Todd’s father.
