Kay Mellor was an English actress, scriptwriter, and director. She was known for creating television shows such as ITV British drama Fat Friends (2000–05), as well as co-creating CITV’s British children’s drama Children’s Ward (1989–2000).
Love, Lies and Records, a BBC One drama starring Rebecca Front and Ashley Jensen, aired in November and December of last year.
Girlfriends, a new ITV drama starring Zoe Wanamaker, Miranda Richardson, and Phyllis Logan, launched in January 2018.
A new season of Mellor’s BBC One drama The Syndicate premiered in March 2021 with a cast that included Neil Morrissey, Katie Morley, Kieran Urquhart, Taj Atwal, and Liberty Hobbs as well as Emily Head, Gaynor Faye, Katie Marsh, and Joe Sugg.
A BAFTA Dennis Potter Award for Outstanding Television Writing was given to Kay in 1997.
In the 2009 Birthday Honours, Mellor was made an OBE and in 2014, she was given the Writers Guild Award for Outstanding Contribution to Writing by her peers.
The Royal Television Society inducted Mellor as a Fellow in 2016. Mellor was given Broadcast’s Special Recognition Award in February 2020.
