On Saturday, Wynonna and Ashley, daughters of late country music star Naomi Judd announced the death of their mother.
Ashley and Wynonna both gave emotional tributes to their mother, Judd, at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville just a few hours after her passing.
“Today, we sisters experienced a tragedy. We lost our beautiful mother to the disease of mental illness,” Wynonna and Ashley said Saturday. “We are shattered. We are navigating profound grief and know that as we loved her, she was loved by her public. We are in unknown territory.”
In 1946, Diana Ellen Judd was born in Ashland, Kentucky, the daughter of a coal miner. Naomi and Wynonna began performing professionally as a duo in Nashville while Naomi was still working as a single mother nurse.
For a time, the mother-daughter duo stood out for their unique blend of blues, folk, and country music.
Mother, I’m Crazy, Why Not Me and Turn It Loose were some of the Judds’ most popular songs, as well as Girls Night Out in 1985, Rockin’ With the Rhythm of the Rain in 1986, and Grandpa in 1986.
Naomi ended her career in 1991 but Wynonna proceeded to perform on her own as a soloist.
