Peter Bowles was an English theater and television actor who lived from 16 October 1936 to 17 March 2022.
When World War II broke out, Bowles’ father was sent to Nottingham to work as a chauffeur for Rolls-Royce, where the family resided in a modest “two-up, two-down” home.
Bowles went to Mapperley Plains Primary School, then Nottingham High Pavement Grammar School, where he was taught English by author Stanley Middleton and received a scholarship to study acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), where he later became an associate.
Bowles started his acting career in 1956 with the Old Vic Company, appearing in Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, Troilus and Cressida, and Richard II.
The troupe toured North America after a season, culminating in a sell-out season at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway. He appeared in a number of productions at the Bristol Old Vic.
