Buthelezi, who was 24 at the time, had just finished his university studies and had a degree in botany and zoology. According to Boxing South Africa, South African boxer Simiso Buthelezi passed away on Tuesday night.
Buthelezi was taken into an induced coma in Durban on Sunday after shadow boxing in the ring, and he has remained in the coma since then.
The lightweight boxer was in the midst of a bout for the WBF All Africa lightweight title when he suddenly became disoriented in the ring and had to be brought to hospital for treatment.
On Sunday night at eleven o’clock, he was inducted into a coma. Buthelezi went on the offensive against Siphesihle Mntungwa in the tenth and last round of their fight, causing Mntungwa to fall backwards between the ropes.
This occurred in the final minutes of the fight. Buthelezi, who had been unhit for the majority of the battle, eventually turned his back on Mntungwa and started shadow boxing toward the corner of the ring.
At this point, referee Elroy Marshall promptly stopped the fight and asked for medical assistance.
Ring announcer Sipho Mashego stated to ESPN that Buthelezi had been in complete control of the battle and that the audience was left “dumbfounded” by Buthelezi’s abrupt shift in demeanour throughout the fight.
