Toru Takahashi, a Tokyo-based photo editor, and photographer for the Associated Press has passed away today after battling with lung cancer at the age of 62. Toru who is from Kumamoto in Southern Japan had spent decades working diligently by taking pictures and sharing knowledge with his colleagues as an editor.
According to his wife, Mieko Takahashi, Takahashi, who was being treated for lung cancer, passed away on Friday, June 3, 2022, just days after returning home from the hospital.
He joined AP in Tokyo as an editing assistant, doing errands for photographers and writers. Senior staff members taught him English and photography, and he eventually got a job editing and taking images.
Takahashi covered a variety of major international events during his 36-year career at AP, including Hong Kong’s 1997 reversion to China and the 2002 South Korean presidential election. He also covered stories from two Olympics; the Sydney Games in 2000 and the Beijing Games in 2008, and seven Formula One races, as an editor and photographer.
