What happened to Cain Velasquez?
Cain Velasquez has been charged with attempted murder. Cain Velasquez, a former UFC heavyweight champion and WWE wrestler, is being held in a California jail without bail after allegedly being engaged in a shooting.
Velasquez was detained in connection with a shooting in which an adult male was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after being shot, according to San Jose police.
Velasquez was a two-time UFC heavyweight champion, defeating Brock Lesnar at UFC 121 in 2011 and losing to Junior dos Santos the following year.
In 2013, he reclaimed the title from dos Santos, successfully defending it twice before being dethroned by Fabricio Werdum.
Velasquez withdrew from mixed martial arts and entered pro wrestling after two more fights, a win over Travis Browne at UFC 200 and a 26-second knockout defeat to Francis Ngannou in 2019.
In WWE, he was unable to defeat Lesnar for the heavyweight championship at a contentious show in Saudi Arabia, following which wrestlers were reportedly detained on the tarmac by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman due to a payment disagreement.
Velasquez has also competed for AAA, a Mexican lucha libre organization.
“At this moment, the motive and circumstances surrounding this act are still being investigated,” the statement said.
