An indictment charging Strangis and Melngailis with second-degree grand larceny, second-degree criminal tax fraud, first-degree plan to defraud, violation of labor laws, and other offenses were filed against them.

If convicted on all 24 counts, they could face up to 15 years in jail. When the Melngailis were apprehended, they agreed to a plea bargain and were sentenced to four months in prison plus five years probation.

Strangis pled guilty to four charges of grand larceny in the fourth degree and was sentenced to one year in prison and five years of probation, as well as having to pay $840,000 in reparations to the victims of the crime.

Strangis was imprisoned for one year and three days before being freed from Rikers Island in May of that year.

At the time, Brooklyn Supreme Court Judge Danny Chun issued a warning to Strangis, stating that if he breaches his probation, he might face an extra five to fifteen years in prison on grand larceny charges.

Melngailis filed for divorce from Strangis in May of this year, and the couple has since been kept mainly out of the public spotlight.

His five-year probation, which he asked to be served in his home state of Massachusetts, is expected to expire in May 2022, when he would be 41 years old and will have served the majority of his sentence.
