Following his departure from the England set-up following the Ashes this winter, the 52-year-old was appointed Afghanistan head coach in March.
“Graham Thorpe has recently been gravely unwell and is presently getting treatment in hospital,” a PCA statement said on Tuesday.
“His prognosis is unknown at this moment, and we need privacy for him and his family. Our hearts go out to Graham and his family.”
Thorpe served as England’s batting coach from 2010 to 2022, resigning in February 2022 following their 4-0 Ashes loss against Australia.
“Our hearts go out to Graham Thorpe and his family. Thorpey, we’re with you “England Cricket posted a tweet.
Thorpe, a former Surrey left-hander, was regarded as one of the best English cricketers of his period, having played 100 Tests and hitting 16 hundred before retiring in 2005.
He then began his coaching career in Australia, where he worked with players such as Steve Smith and David Warner in New South Wales before joining the England and Wales Cricket Board as a batting coach.
