Shirley Hughes was born in West Kirby, United Kingdom.
Hughes grew up in West Kirby on the Wirral, the daughter of Liverpool business owner Thomas James Hughes and his wife Kathleen.
She reported being inspired by artists such as Arthur Rackham and W. Heath Robinson as a kid, as well as the cinema and the Walker Art Gallery later in life.
Hughes attended West Kirby Grammar School, although she was not a particularly bright student, according to Hughes, who dropped out at the age of 16 to pursue a career in sketching and costume design at the Liverpool School of Art.
She eventually went to Oxford’s Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art.
She went to Notting Hill, London, after finishing art school. She married architect and etcher John Sebastian Papendiek Vulliamy in 1952.
Ed Vulliamy, a journalist, Tom Vulliamy, a geneticist, and Clara Vulliamy, a children’s book illustrator, are their three children.
Lucy & Tom’s Day, which was turned into a series of books, was her first published book, which she both authored and illustrated.
She went on to write almost fifty more stories, including Dogger (1977), the Alfie series (1977), which featured a little boy named Alfie and his sister Annie-Rose on occasion, and the Olly and Me series (1977), which featured a young boy named Olly and his sister Annie-Rose on occasion (1993)
