Randy J. Holland was born on January 27, 1947, in Elizabeth, New Jersey to James Holland and Virginia Holland. He passed away on March 15 2022. Before his passing, he was an Associate Justice of the Delaware Supreme Court.
Holland’s family moved to Milford, DE. shortly after he was born and he ended up attending the Milford High School, where he played football and served as the quarterback and captain of the football team. He also played a little baseball and served as a catcher on the baseball team.
After his high school education, Holland went to the Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics in 1969. He also earned graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School and received the Loughlin Award for legal ethics. He also received a Master of Laws in the Judicial Process from the University of Virginia Law School.
In 1986, Holland became the youngest person to serve as a Delaware Supreme Court judge after he was appointed to the court by Governor Michael N. Castle. In 2009, he became the longest-serving justice in Delaware history. Two years after, he was reappointed by the former Governor Jack A. Markell and was confirmed by the Delaware Senate for an unprecedented third 12-year term.
